Mission Trips are planned for adults, adults with youth, and youth. Some of these will be local, others international sites. These provide the participants an opportunity to step outside their own culture and experience “living on the edge” of their faith walk-sharing Christ’s love in word and action with others. These are always spiritually stretching experiences.

Particulars:

Service Opportunities:
Wheelchair distributions and seating at the Mission Mazahua site and/or in local communities; work with local churches through community outreaches and worship; light construction and painting at wheelchair recipients’ homes; and interaction with local community—children and adults.

Lodging:
Mission Mazahua is located in an ex-hacienda built in 1718, which has been reconstructed for our ministry programs and for Christian retreats. Most sleeping areas are dormitory style. The buildings are rustic, not unlike most campgrounds in the US. There is no central heating (and air-conditioning is not needed). We have hot water (most of the time). There are showers and toilets, some within the dorms, some at a short distance centrally located for more than one dorm. While electricity and water normally work, there might be some times when there isn’t one or the other or neither. Be prepared for the unexpected.

Meals & Transportation Included:
WAP provides all ground transportation from and to the airport and throughout the week. All meals are carefully prepared from the kitchen on-site. This is the second time for us to send a Team, but TMP has successfully coordinated many Teams here over several years.

World Access Project—Philosophy:

Throughout the world, there are tens of millions of people with various disabilities who cannot afford the basic equipment needed to obtain mobility, and thus to participate as active members of their communities.

The causes of these disabilities are varied: disease, war, land mines, and accidents. In many cases, they are the members of loving families… but families who are simply too poor to afford the needed equipment. In many developing—or “third world”—countries, a simple wheelchair can cost more than a year’s wages. This is why The Mobility Project came into being. World Access Project continues this philosophy and exists to serve disabled people living in poverty throughout the developing nations of the world.

World Access Project is a non-profit humanitarian organization, committed to serving people with disabilities who have a wealth of unique gifts to offer their community, but have been hindered from doing so by poverty and the resulting lack of even the most basic mobility aids.

But more importantly, we are a group of individuals who all share a common passion. And we exist to serve individuals… valuable wonderful individuals with a bright hope and a future! We would love for you to meet them, and us!

The Mobility Project—History with Resurrection:
Resurrection Lutheran Church and our RAM Teams have been supportive of The Mobility Project since 2003 when we first contacted Steve Oliver about our interest in serving an outreach mission endeavor in an international setting. That was the year we began mobility aid collections from the Houston area through Resurrection. PUSH, International and now World Access Project have become off-shoot organizations from The Mobility Project (now a part of Hope Haven).

Wheelchair Collections:
Resurrection Lutheran Church is one of the mobility device collection centers in the USA for Hope Haven (formerly The Mobility Project), PUSH, International, and World Access Project. Wheelchairs, walkers, canes, and crutches in any condition (even parts) are collected at the church and shipped to refurbishing centers for future distribution to the poor in many locations around the world. Wheelchairs can cost more than a year’s wages and would be impossible to own in many countries. They are given with no strings attached to those encountered by this organization.

Please be on the lookout for any unused mobility devices that can be brought to the church and recycled to those in need. Donation receipts can be given from the church. If cards are completed and attached to the wheelchairs when donated, a thank you photo will be sent to the donor showing the recipient seated in the chair they gave.

Contact the church office or our Collections Team Leaders: Jack Waters, Ron Robinson, and Scott Brodie, for more info or to join the Collections Team.

—CAOM Philosophy:

C.A. Outreach Ministries desires to touch every part of a person’s life with the Lord Jesus Christ in Belize. The Plan is to do this through evangelism, medical assistance, education, housing, agriculture, and training.

History:

Outreach Ministries, later incorporated as Central America Outreach Ministries, Inc., began in 1975 with God’s call to Christian businessman John Collier, through a miraculous deliverance from an otherwise fatal airplane crash in Belize, Central America (see his book Two Minutes to Live). John made a total life commitment to God, giving Him a blank check on the rest of his life. As a result, John moved to Belize, Central America on faith with $100 a month support to reach Belizeans for the Lord and work with groups and team ministries from various parts of the world.

God has led John to help plant churches around Belize, and to work in the southern jungles with the Maya, Kechi, and Garifunas. Doors were opened in the early 1990’s for a ministry outside Belize City at the Embassy Mission House and Hotel, which now encompasses team ministry, a Christian library with several branches, Christian trade schools, Bible studies, Christian musical and dramatic presentations, and a program for high school and college credit in international studies.

Believing the Lord called him to work specifically with mission teams coming to Belize, John has sought to help individuals and groups find specific areas where they would like to minister through C.A. Outreach Ministries, Inc.; such as, evangelism, teaching, conferences, libraries, Vacation Bible Schools, orphanages, and local schools. CAOM also operates trade schools in which local people can learn skills to make a living, such as sewing, baking, construction, cabinet making, and agriculture.

C.A. Outreach Ministries, Inc. is a non-profit, US tax-exempt Christian organization and a registered Belizean NGO (National Government Organization).

—Central America Lutheran Mission Society—Philosophy:

Central America Lutheran Mission Society (Connecting and Advancing Leaders in Mission and Service) has as its Mission Statement: Our mission is to be an effective participant and partner in fulfilling Christ’s Great Commission to all races and cultures within Central America and the Caribbean and to connect US mission leaders to strategic mission and service opportunities in order to advance God’s work.

What they hope to accomplish is a growing number of confident and competent leaders (lay and ordained) in Central America, the Caribbean, and the United States, who are actively involved in serving the needs of their communities and sharing their Christian faith with lost people. They also expect growing and healthy missionary churches and institutions (schools, hospitals, community leaders, homes for the aged, etc) willing and able to serve effectively to the glory of God. And they expect healthy partnerships that benefit both North American and Central American churches/institutions and their members and help them work more effectively.

History:

The vision for the formation of CALMS grew out of discussions in 1999 between Gloria Dei Lutheran Church (Houston, Texas), LCMS World Mission, and Lutheran Hour Ministries. Gloria Dei was looking for opportunities to guide the allocation of a portion of their mission budget into a specific program in which they could involve their members.

Gloria Dei invited other congregations to join them in developing a new mission society to advance the mission, initially in Panama, and to meet the growing trend for congregations to become more directly involved in cross-cultural mission opportunities.

In addition to providing more direct involvement through short-term mission opportunities, the new mission society offered the opportunity for congregations to pool their resources to make a significant impact.

Since it’s beginning, CALMS has grown to include 10 partner congregations and has expanded its work to four Central American and Caribbean countries: Panama, Guatemala, Dominican Republic, and Belize.

CALMS in Guatemala—

CALMS became involved in Guatemala several years ago when the national church invited the organization to help the national church and the Children’s Christian Concern Society to expand the children’s ministry. CALMS today is helping the national church develop a housing program to provide low-cost housing for Lutheran families. The number of homes built has grown each year, and last year, CALMS built 14 houses and plans to keep up the good work with the help of the Guatemalan coordinator, the local congregations, and mission Teams.

Based on what we learn from these projects, CALMS hopes to help the Lutheran Church of Guatemala to build one or more “Lutheran” villages. The vision is to use homebuilding as a strategy to plant new churches in cities where the church has not worked previously. CALMS is in the process of helping establish a new medical mission for the Lake Amatitlan area in cooperation with Dr. Elry Orozco, a Lutheran physician with many years of medical and development experience.
