Funding Mission Grants With "Mites"
 |
“Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a fraction of a penny. Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, ‘I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth, but she, out of her poverty, put in everything-all she had to live on’." (Mark 12:41-43)
RWIM uses "mite" boxes to collect coins (or any denomination of currency, including checks) which are gathered at weekly Bible study and on the first Sunday of each month in the large Mite Box in the Narthex. All congregation members are welcome and encouraged to be "mite" contributors. The mites collected are sent to the Texas District LWML on a monthly basis. Texas District retains 75% of the amount and forwards 25% of the total collected to the national LWML organization. Both organizations use the mites for specific mission grants for projects selected at their biennial conventions. RWIM mite contributions average approximately $1,000.00 yearly.
