Some day down the road, someone will write about our time and culture and describe it as a lonely and isolated group of people who occupy the same land space. We see more and more connection via the internet through chat rooms, emails, IM’s, text messaging, “Facebook”, and all of the other electronic means that we have to hook up. Yet, we are surrounded by lonely and disturbed people. In Crandon Wisconsin, we hear about twenty year old man who shoots and kills 6 people who were at a pizza party. Evidently, he was jealous about his old girlfriend dating someone new. Now, I realize this is at the far end of the spectrum, but it’s a reminder of what is indemic about our whole society. This situation is described as shocking by the town of 2000 people and unexpected of this young man. We don’t condemn the community but we simply note that none of us really know what’s going on in people’s lives. Loneliness reigns in such a way that most people can’t identify someone who can help them through rough times. On the far end of the scale… we see what happens. This situation calls for more than our sympathy for this community. It’s a call out for each of us build friendships. God sent Jesus out to build relationship with us. We were alone, scattered, and hurting. It’s His friendship with us through the cross that not only heals us, but calls us to seek friends.
